Joe Dumars, a Hall of Famer, is set to become the new president of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans. This move marks his return to Louisiana, where he will replace David Griffin. Before joining the Pelicans, Dumars worked as the chief strategy officer for the Sacramento Kings from 2019 to 2022. He has also held a significant role with the NBA league office since 2022, overseeing basketball operations.

Dumars is credited with building the Pistons’ championship-winning team in 2004. He earned the executive of the year award in 2003 for making key trades and draft picks that led the Pistons to seven straight seasons of 50 or more wins. Notably, half of the Pistons’ 14 50-win seasons occurred while he was in charge.

Originally drafted by the Pistons in 1985, Dumars played his entire 14-year NBA career with the team, winning titles in 1989 and 1990 as part of the "Bad Boys."

As he steps into this new role with the Pelicans, Dumars will work closely with general manager Bryson Graham and head coach Willie Green. A significant focus will be on star forward Zion Williamson, who has had a challenging start to his career. Despite being the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, Williamson has only played in 45% of his games and has yet to make a playoff appearance due to injuries.
