Lionsgate has given us a first look at The Resurrection of the Christ, a sequel to 2004’s The Passion of the Christ. This film marks an important milestone in Mel Gibson’s career, as it continues a story he has passionately worked on for over 20 years.
In this new installment, Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen takes over the role of Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel. The change was necessary because Caviezel, now 57, would have required digital de-aging for the role. The story is set just three days after Jesus’ crucifixion, which makes recasting a practical choice.
Another major casting change is that the character of Mary Magdalene, once played by Monica Bellucci, will now be portrayed by Mariela Garriga. She is known for her roles in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One and Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.
Gibson expressed his gratitude towards the cast and crew, emphasizing that this project is much more than just a film for him. “This is a mission I’ve carried for over twenty years,” he said. He also highlighted how reuniting with many original team members helped realize his vision for this project.
The Resurrection of the Christ will be split into two films. Part One will be released on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027, with Part Two to follow a year later on May 25, 2028.
Historically, The Passion of the Christ was a phenomenon. It grossed over $610 million globally, making it one of the highest-grossing R-rated films in U.S. history until 2024. Its success showed a strong audience interest in faith-based films.
Gibson has described the sequels’ script as an “acid trip,” filled with dramatic and ambitious content. He plans to explore themes like the fall of the angels and even visit Hell, making this project complex and intriguing.
