Bill Belichick has signed his contract with North Carolina, officially taking on the role of head coach. This announcement came after he was introduced in December. The school shared the details of his deal, which lasts until the end of 2029.
At 72 years old, Belichick will earn $10 million each year, but only $1 million of that is his base salary. The rest, $9 million, comes from additional income paid monthly.
This salary places Belichick among the top-paid coaches in college football. For context, seven coaches made at least $10 million in 2024, with Georgia’s Kirby Smart topping the list at over $13 million.
Belichick’s contract includes several performance bonuses. He can earn at least $750,000 if North Carolina reaches the College Football Playoff. If the team wins the national championship, he could receive an impressive $1.75 million bonus. Additionally, there are bonuses for bowl games, including at least $150,000 for any bowl game and $350,000 for elite games like the Pop-Tarts Bowl or Gator Bowl.
If the Tar Heels end a season ranked in the top 25, he will gain another bonus of at least $250,000.
The contract also specifies the buyout terms. If Belichick leaves before June 1, the university would owe him $10 million. After that date, the buyout drops significantly to just $1 million.
Despite interest from several NFL teams after the season, Belichick has expressed his commitment to North Carolina. He stated he didn’t come to Chapel Hill to leave, and many have echoed this sentiment.
If the university chooses to fire him without cause before 2027, they would need to pay him his remaining base salary, along with any bonuses and supplemental income he has earned but not yet received.
