Exciting news in the film world! Jonathan Pryce and Nick Mohammed will star in the upcoming comedy murder mystery titled Sleeping Lions. This film, directed by Mat Whitecross, will make its debut at the European Film Market, and Mister Smith Entertainment is handling the sales.
Sky will distribute the film in the UK and Ireland. Filming is expected to start in the UK later this year. Sleeping Lions is based on the 1951 novel An English Murder by Cyril Hare, with a modern twist by writer James Roblin.
Pryce will portray the ailing Earl of Warbeck. He invites his family for one last Christmas celebration at Warbeck Hall. But when a heavy snowstorm hits, they become stranded. As chaos unfolds, an attempt is made on the life of the earl’s son, who leads a controversial new political party.
The production team includes Rupert Lloyd and Cyrus Massoudi from Atar Studios, along with Fiona Neilson’s Mint Pictures. Paul Webster is credited as an executive producer.
Whitecross describes Sleeping Lions as a gothic satire that reflects today’s turbulent times. He aims to challenge murder mystery norms, presenting viewers with a plot where they may find themselves cheering for the villain.
Shane Kelly from Mister Smith Entertainment emphasizes that this film, with its satirical take, will resonate with modern audiences, especially following popular films like Knives Out and Saltburn.
Whitecross is a seasoned filmmaker known for his debut feature The Road To Guantánamo, which earned the Silver Bear for best director at the Berlin Film Festival in 2006. His other notable works include Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Supersonic, a documentary about Oasis. Currently, he is in post-production for Ídolos, a drama focusing on professional motorbike racing.
