PlayStation is experimenting with AI using characters from its popular games. A video has leaked showing Sharwin Raghoebardajal, the director of software engineering at PlayStation, interacting with an early version of AI-generated character Aloy from the game Horizon Forbidden West.
In this video, Raghoebardajal demonstrated how Aloy can respond to player questions, providing lore and backstory. Although the AI voice is different from the game, Aloy’s facial movements and expressions sync well with her responses. Raghoebardajal mentioned that this is just a first look at the technology being developed internally at Sony.
The AI system blends multiple technologies, including OpenAI’s Whisper for speech recognition, while communication uses tools like GPT-4 and Llama 3. Sony’s own Mockingbird tech helps animate the character’s expressions, and Emotional Voice Synthesis (EVS) is used for the AI’s speech. Raghoebardajal noted that while the prototype was tested on a PC, it could also operate on PS5 consoles with minimal adjustments.
This development comes at a time when many in the gaming industry are voicing concerns about AI’s impact on voice talent. Recently, the French voice actors for Apex Legends refused contracts that would allow their voices to be used for AI training.
