Stepping off the plane in South Korea was exciting. I was ready for a new adventure, but I quickly realized it would take some adjustments.
In February 2025, I joined a four-month study abroad program at Chungnam National University in Daejeon. Out of 270 students from various countries, I was one of just two from Lamar University. I soon discovered that studying abroad is about more than just classes; it’s about adjusting to a new culture, language, and way of life.
Language Challenges
Communication was my first hurdle. With limited Korean skills, ordering food or asking for help was tricky. I leaned on translation apps like Papago to help navigate these daily tasks. But those struggles became chances to learn.
To improve my language skills, I enrolled in a four-hour daily Korean class. It pushed me out of my comfort zone but helped me immerse myself in the culture. Language classes not only teach you words but also the meanings behind them. Resources like The Foreign Service Institute offer insights into language learning that highlight immersion’s importance.
Budgeting Wisely
Another adjustment was budgeting. South Korea’s different currency meant it was easy to spend without thinking. Food and transportation felt cheap, which was tempting. Fellow student Kolja Krohne from Germany advised, “While traveling in Korea is affordable, if you want to visit nearby countries, you must budget wisely.”
Knowing where your money goes is essential, especially if you plan to travel. Using apps to track spending can help you stay within limits.
Making Connections
One major worry before I left home was making friends. As one of the few American students, I felt nervous. But I was surprised by how welcoming everyone was. Many students wanted to connect, making it easy to form friendships.
Krohne reassured me, “You’ll meet others feeling the same way. It won’t be long before you feel at home.” He was right. The community spirit among exchange students made it comfortable.
The Bigger Picture
The most rewarding experiences often happen outside the classroom. Exploring new places, spontaneous adventures, and late-night talks with friends created memories I cherish deeply.
Amber McLeod, another student, shared how studying abroad changed her. She said, “I’ve become more outgoing. This journey redefined my career path and made me realize I want to connect with people.”
McLeod emphasized the importance of being present. “Enjoy every moment; it goes by so fast.”
Personal Growth
Studying abroad reshaped more than my view of the world; it reshaped me. Navigating challenges in a new country built my confidence and adaptability. I returned home with lifelong friendships and a new appreciation for diverse cultures.
