Expect an Increase in Sea Snake Sightings in New Zealand: Here’s Why You Should Be Excited!

More sea snakes might be spotted on New Zealand beaches soon. Climate change is increasing the chances of storms that could carry these snakes closer to shore, according to the Department of Conservation (DOC).

Recently, a yellow-bellied sea snake was found at Omaha Beach, north of Auckland. Sadly, it seemed to have been killed by a dog or something else. Normally, sea snakes thrive in the warm waters to the north of New Zealand, but strong storms can push them south.

DOC marine science advisor Karen Middlemiss explained, “When storms happen up there, it can drive ocean currents south. This might mean we see more sea snakes washing up on our beaches.” She believes this is a reasonable expectation due to the growing intensity of these storms linked to climate change.

There is a bit of confusion regarding whether these snakes are “native” to New Zealand. Middlemiss clarified that if an animal arrives on its own, it’s considered native—but in this case, sea snakes aren’t breeding here. The waters are simply too cold for them to survive long after washing ashore, usually just a couple of days.

If you spot a sea snake or a krait on the beach, she recommends keeping your distance. “If one were to bite you, it could be serious,” she cautioned. However, they typically avoid humans unless provoked. In fact, there have been no reported fatalities from bites in New Zealand.

Recent data supports concerns about changes in wildlife patterns due to climate change. A survey by the World Wildlife Fund noted a 30% increase in marine species moving toward cooler waters over the last fifty years. This trend could lead to more interactions between humans and creatures like sea snakes in unexpected places.
