The University of Nevada, Reno’s College of Liberal Arts is excited to present a fresh take on “Romeo & Juliet,” opening October 10 at the Redfield Proscenium Theatre. This modern version of Shakespeare’s timeless tale dives into the clash between youthful love and a harsh reality.
Directed by Assistant Professor Rosie Brownlow-Calkin, this adaptation reimagines the story in a contemporary American setting. It highlights how external pressures shape the lives of all the young characters, not just the legendary lovers. “Every production of Shakespeare needs to make its own decisions,” says Brownlow-Calkin. “For us, that meant emphasizing the societal impacts on the kids of the story.”
This production explores the tragedy that befalls not only Romeo and Juliet but also the other young people in the play. Their dreams and lives are profoundly affected by the rigid structures around them. It’s a story that resonates today, reflecting ongoing struggles young people face against societal expectations and barriers.
The show runs from October 10 to 19. Evening performances are at 7:30 p.m. on select nights, and matinee shows will take place at 1:30 p.m. on October 12 and 19. After the evening performance on October 11, there will be an engaging talk-back session with the creative team, offering insights into the production.
This rendition of “Romeo & Juliet” is part of a broader season in the theatre department that balances innovation with tradition. The department consistently delivers captivating performances, nurturing the talents of its student actors and crew. A recent survey indicated that 78% of attendees find local theatre productions enhance community engagement, making nights like this significant for the audience and performers alike.
