The Ensemble Theatre Company of Santa Barbara (ETC) is excited to present William Shakespeare’s “Hamlet.” This production will be directed by Margaret Shigeko Starbuck and marks the third show of the 2024-25 season.

Performances run from February 6 to February 23 at The New Vic Theatre, located at 33 W. Victoria St.

This version of “Hamlet” is set in the modern world, which adds a fresh twist to the timeless tragedy. It takes viewers into a high-pressure environment where anxiety and ambition are on a collision course.

When Hamlet returns home from college, he finds chaos. His father has died, his mother has married his uncle, and everything he thought he knew is falling apart. To make matters worse, his father’s ghost calls for revenge.

What follows is a gripping tale filled with secrets, betrayal, and shattered trust. Hamlet’s journey tests his loyalty and challenges his understanding of reality.

ETC describes this adaptation as “darkly funny, emotionally raw, and delightfully self-aware.” It aims to be appealing to a new generation, revealing how personal struggles are tied to larger political issues.

Scott DeVine, the executive artistic director of ETC, emphasizes that this production is relevant today. “It’s a bold and ambitious journey into one of the greatest stories ever told,” he says.

Margaret Shigeko Starbuck, who serves as both director and adaptor, is a theater director based in Los Angeles. She has directed various notable plays, including “Henry IV Parts I and II” and “Measure for Measure.” Starbuck obtained her degree in Theatre from UCLA and has been involved with various theater companies, showcasing her talent and dedication to the craft.

The cast features talented actors including Will Block as Hamlet, Jono Eiland as Horatio, and Corey Jones as Claudius. Each actor brings their unique experience to these classic roles, ensuring a dynamic performance.

The creative team behind the scenes includes scenic designer Yuki Izumihara, lighting designer Michael Rathbun, and sound designer John Zalewski, among others. Their collaboration promises a visually stunning production.

Tickets range from $25 to $94, with special rates for patrons under 36 and students. To check availability, you can contact the ETC ticket office or visit their website.
