FREELAND, MI – Finding a genuine Philly cheesesteak in the Tri-Cities can be tough.
Big, Meaty, Phillys is here to change that.
Kelsey and Zach Schatzer launched their food truck on February 20, bringing the classic Philly flavor to the area.
Zach always dreamed of running a food truck. Friends with the owners of Wonder Burger, a popular local food truck, they received great help getting started.
“Their guidance was essential,” Zach shared.
The couple’s goal is simple: to impress anyone from Philadelphia with their cheesesteak.
To achieve this, they use authentic ingredients from Philly, including Cooper Sharp White cheese and Amoroso’s Bread Rolls, both delivered directly from the city.
On their first day at Tri-City Brewing Company, three Philadelphia natives bought cheesesteaks. They mentioned they hadn’t found anything like home until they tried Big, Meaty, Phillys.
Zach loves ordering cheesesteaks whenever he eats out, and he noticed many local spots had similar flavors. He wanted to create something unique.
The menu includes the ‘OG Philly’ with ribeye steak, cheese, and onion on an eight-inch roll. There’s also ‘The Meaty’ Philly, ‘Merryaki’ Philly, and ‘The Herbivore’ Philly. They serve plain fries, Philly fries, and cheese fries, along with options for mushrooms, green peppers, and homemade garlic aioli toppings.
Instead of calling names for orders, they use a wireless system to alert customers when their food is ready. This allows folks to wait comfortably in their cars or find a seat while they wait.
Being from mid-Michigan, Kelsey and Zach plan to set up at various locations in Saginaw, Bay, and Midland counties.
The pair is committed to giving back to their community. They recently helped at a food giveaway in Saginaw, serving 1,500 meals in just three hours.
Encouraged by their experiences, Kelsey and Zach remain grateful to the community that has welcomed them. They want to continue growing their roots here.
The local food truck community has also provided incredible support, which they deeply appreciate.
For private events, Big, Meaty, Phillys can be booked via email at info@bigmeatyphillys.com.
Catch them at the Freeland Walleye Festival, happening April 24-27.
