Director Denis Villeneuve wants Dune: Part Three to be a grand experience. He recently shared that the film is meant to be enjoyed on the biggest screens, especially in IMAX. “That’s how we dreamed the movie,” he explained. Fans can look forward to seeing it in theaters on December 18, but there’s already buzz online.
For those anxious to catch a glimpse, a creative user on X named KDCloudy discovered an entertaining way to create a sort of “Franken-IMAX” trailer. By layering the vertical Instagram trailer over the horizontal YouTube version, the scenes stretched out, giving an impression similar to IMAX. Another user, Wniebowziety, took it further by actually producing this mash-up, and it turned out pretty cool.
Villeneuve shared more insights at a recent event. He mentioned most of the film was shot on 65mm film, but some scenes were captured on IMAX film for the first time, adding depth and detail. He also preferred the digital presentation for desert scenes because of its raw intensity.
While Dune: Part Three is set to debut on the same day as Avengers: Doomsday, the IMAX version will dominate screens for a while. Expect ticket sales to be competitive when they launch later this year.
It’s worth noting that IMAX movies typically pull in larger audiences. According to a recent report, IMAX screenings made up over 10% of the U.S. box office in 2022, indicating a steady interest in immersive viewing experiences.
As you check out the Franken-IMAX trailer, how does it compare to the original? Does it ramp up your excitement for the film?
