Background

The University of Utah is a major research institution in Utah, covering a vast 1,534 acres on the eastern side of Salt Lake City. The campus includes key facilities like the Health Sciences section, which has five hospitals and a range of research centers.

Managing parking for such a large community is no small feat. The university’s Commuter Services handles more than 30,000 parking spaces, making it essential to create a smooth experience for students, staff, and visitors alike.

“Our priority is to make parking as easy and convenient as possible,” says Gregory Hansen Christoffersen, Manager of Visitor Parking and Off-Site Lots. “Whether it’s for class, visiting a patient, or attending an event, we want our visitors to have a seamless experience.”

The Challenge

Previously, the university relied on staffed pay booths. Later, they switched to a pay-by-phone system. Unfortunately, the app required users to download it and enter their stall number manually, which made the parking experience cumbersome.

“We had to post signs at every stall, and it got expensive,” Christoffersen explains. “It wasn’t the convenience we wanted to offer.”

Solution: T2 MobilePay

The university implemented T2 MobilePay, which allows users to pay for parking without needing an app. Visitors can simply scan a QR code or send a text to park.

“The product works exceptionally well. It’s easy to use, and we much prefer T2 MobilePay,” says Christoffersen. “We’ve improved visitor experience greatly. No app means fewer hassles.”

Results

Since adopting T2 MobilePay, the University of Utah has seen impressive results:

  • Adoption Rate: MobilePay usage jumped from 27% to 70% in just a few years.
  • Cost Savings: Lower maintenance costs due to fewer kiosks.
  • Enhanced User Experience: Customers face fewer issues with abandoned sessions and service calls thanks to self-service options.
  • Flexibility: Quick adjustments for event pricing make special occasions like concerts or athletic events easier to manage.

“MobilePay has been much simpler to maintain. We’ve greatly reduced kiosk upkeep costs by shifting to this system,” says Christoffersen. “Students find it extremely convenient to pay as they walk to their classes.”

A Closer Look at Parking Technology Trends

Parking technology is changing rapidly. Recent surveys indicate that about 80% of people prefer cashless payments for parking. As more institutions adopt user-friendly solutions like T2 MobilePay, we can expect a significant shift away from traditional pay stations and booths. This trend highlights a growing desire for convenience and efficiency, particularly in busy environments like universities and hospitals.
