Doctors’ Center Hospital, part of Orlando Health Puerto Rico, recently hosted a group of pre-medical students from the University of Central Florida. This visit is part of an ongoing educational mission designed to enhance their understanding of healthcare in Puerto Rico.
Sixteen students from the International Medical Organization (IMO) shadowed doctors and staff at various hospital locations, including San Juan and Bayamón. They observed real surgeries, prepared welcome kits for patients, and even toured an ambulance. One of the highlights was hearing firsthand accounts from local physicians about their experiences working on the island.
Dr. Carlos Blanco, president of Doctors’ Center Hospital, expressed the importance of these visits. He noted that they not only provide students with insight into medical operations but also inspire them to consider future roles in healthcare on the island. “Programs like this allow us to share knowledge and experiences, reinforcing the connection between future medical providers and our hospitals,” he said.
This is the second year that the students have visited Puerto Rico. Dr. Blanco highlighted how these experiences help them build cultural awareness, which is increasingly important in today’s global healthcare landscape. Omar Gonzalez, vice president of Orlando Health’s Caribbean Region, remarked on the bond between Central Florida and Puerto Rico. He emphasized how these programs nurture the next wave of medical professionals, which is crucial for communities in need of healthcare.
