India’s new Vande Bharat Sleeper train recently hit a remarkable speed of 180 km/h in a test run between the Kota–Nagda section. This achievement highlights the nation’s commitment to enhancing long-distance rail travel.
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared a video of the test on social media. The train’s digital speedometer peaked at 182 km/h, showcasing its impressive capabilities. The video also featured a unique “water test.” Glasses filled with water stacked neatly on top of each other, proving the train’s stability even at high speeds.
Vaishnaw tweeted, “Vande Bharat Sleeper tested today. It ran at 180 km/h between Kota–Nagda. Our water test showed the technology behind this new train.” The recent test promises a lot for future rail journeys in India.
While the current Vande Bharat Express operates at a speed of 160 km/h, the new sleeper train is built for speeds up to 180 km/h. However, real operating speeds will depend on the tracks and other conditions.
The sleeper train is set to revolutionize overnight travel, especially for AC-class passengers. With modern features and enhanced comfort, it aims to significantly cut down travel times on busy routes. According to the Railway Ministry, the sleeper version will initially serve heavily trafficked corridors before spreading across the whole rail network.
This rollout of the Vande Bharat Sleeper aligns with a broader trend in transportation where speed and comfort are key. A recent survey revealed that more than 70% of travelers prefer high-speed trains for long journeys due to their convenience and efficiency. Experts in transport innovation believe that this trend could redefine public transit in India, making it a leading option for travelers.
The government’s continued investment in semi-high-speed rail corridors underscores its intention to modernize the rail infrastructure. Recently, a new Vande Bharat Express service launched from Chennai to Narasapur, improving connections in coastal Andhra Pradesh.
With the introduction of the sleeper train, Indian Railways is poised to offer an experience that blends speed with comfort, setting a new benchmark for train travel in the country.
