Experience Innovation: Sonowal Welcomes India’s First Very Large Gas Carrier ‘Shivalik’ at Visakhapatnam Port

Visakhapatnam: Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal recently welcomed India’s first Very Large Gas Carrier (VLGC) named ‘Shivalik’ at Visakhapatnam Port. This vessel, flying the Indian flag, was added to the fleet by the Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) on September 10. Its arrival marks an important step forward for India’s maritime industry and energy logistics.

“The induction of ‘Shivalik’ is a proud moment for us, reflecting our growth in maritime capabilities,” Sonowal said during the ceremony. He highlighted how this achievement ties into broader national objectives like Atmanirbhar Bharat, which aims for self-reliance in various sectors, including shipping.

Sonowal also praised the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) for ensuring efficient operations for the vessel’s first LPG consignment. The Indian government is keen on turning Visakhapatnam into a major hub for energy logistics along the eastern coast.

Interestingly, the shipping sector is undergoing changes. According to recent studies, the global LPG carrier market is expected to grow significantly, reflecting rising energy demands. In India, this aligns with the government’s focus on boosting local shipbuilding and logistics capabilities.

During the ceremony, Sonowal engaged with the crew of ‘Shivalik’ and acknowledged their vital role in advancing India’s maritime industry. He also commended ongoing modernization efforts by the VPA that aim to enhance infrastructure, making it easier to manage future energy logistics.

The arrival of ‘Shivalik’ serves not only as a technical achievement but also as a symbol of India’s vision—a step closer to maritime self-sufficiency and energy security.
