The Russian-Indian collaboration, known as Kinet, unveiled its first design for a high-speed sleeper coach at the International Railway Equipment Exhibition in New Delhi. This partnership involves Russian rolling stock companies and India’s Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL). They aim to manufacture and maintain 120 high-speed Vande Bharat trains.
Nishunk Garg, a project director at Kinet, mentioned that the first prototype should be ready by June next year, with production expected to start by December. He also highlighted that they have completed the car body of the first sleeper coach at their facility in Latur, Maharashtra. Kinet secured the contract with a competitive bid of about ₹1.2 billion (approximately $14.61 million) per train, beating out major players like Siemens, Alstom, and Stadler Rail.
The goal is to launch the first Vande Bharat sleeper coach train within the next year. The Vande Bharat program, initiated in 2019, aims to modernize long-distance travel and improve efficiency in Indian Railways.
Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, during the exhibition, shared updates on India’s next-gen high-speed trains and expressed a strong focus on exports to markets in Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. He noted the active operation of Vande Bharat 3.0, which marks considerable advancements from earlier versions. The government plans to build 7,000 km of passenger corridors by 2047 and intends to acquire 4,500 new Vande Bharat trains. This procurement plan represents a significant investment of approximately $65 billion.
Interestingly, the growing demand for efficient railway systems aligns with global trends. Many countries are modernizing railways to support sustainable transport. A recent survey revealed that over 60% of travelers prefer trains for long distances due to comfort and reduced environmental impact.
The innovations by Kinet and the broader Vande Bharat initiative not only promise better travel options but could also position India as a key player in the global railway manufacturing sector. As projects like this unfold, they may pave the way for future advancements in transportation both domestically and abroad.
