India is set to introduce its first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, connecting Kamakhya in Assam to Howrah in West Bengal. This exciting announcement was made by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. He shared that all tests and certifications for this modern sleeper train have been completed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the service later this month.
This new train marks a big step for Indian Railways, bringing a semi-high-speed overnight travel option. It can reach speeds of up to 180 km/h, combining quick travel with comfortable sleeper-class facilities. Passengers can expect improved comfort, safety, and efficiency on long journeys.
Vaishnaw highlighted that 2026 will bring major reforms focusing on passengers. The train features ergonomic interiors, advanced safety systems, and region-specific catering. Travelers will enjoy authentic Assamese and Bengali dishes, adding a local touch to the experience.
Fare prices for the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will be lower than flight costs on similar routes, and meals will be included. This makes it an attractive choice for those traveling overnight.
The train will have 16 coaches, accommodating 823 passengers. It includes 11 AC 3-Tier coaches, four AC 2-Tier coaches, and one First AC coach. Features like cushioned berths, smooth suspension, noise reduction, and a modern Passenger Information System aim to enhance the travel experience.
Special facilities are available for Divyangjan passengers, with updated toilets and hygiene technologies. It also includes the Kavach safety system, which protects trains automatically, alongside emergency talk-back units for passenger communication.
This new service will improve connectivity between Assam and West Bengal. Several districts in both states, including Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and areas like Coochbehar and Jalpaiguri in West Bengal, will benefit. Enhanced rail links can foster regional trade and tourism while boosting the local economy.
The launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train highlights Indian Railways’ commitment to modernization and passenger comfort. With the rise of train travel options, it’s worth noting that data from a recent survey revealed that 60% of Indian travelers prefer trains over flights for short to medium distances.
