In September, Monmouth University celebrated the 50th anniversary of Bruce Springsteen’s iconic album, Born to Run. As part of this commemoration, the university’s record label, Blue Hawk, released an EP titled Runaway American Dream: Innovative Interpretations of Springsteen 50 Years Later. This collection features unique interpretations of five songs from the original album, all performed by university students.
The title track carries the same name as Springsteen’s song, emphasizing the spirit of renewal and creativity. The EP includes Thunder Road, Backstreets, She’s the One, and Tenth Avenue Freeze-out. Each rendition offers a fresh take, blending modern sounds with the classic lyrics. For instance, Michael Anthony Rocks and Kristen Wilczewski’s version of She’s the One transforms the track into an upbeat dance-pop duet. In contrast, Backstreets, performed by Amani Lillian, provides a gentle, emotional twist, showcasing her warm, heartfelt delivery.
Research indicates that music evolves significantly over time. Historical reinterpretations, like those in this EP, can breathe new life into timeless classics, making them relevant to younger audiences. According to a survey by Nielsen Music, 65% of people aged 16-24 actively seek out music from past decades, indicating a strong interest in reimagined versions of older songs.
Springsteen himself has endorsed this project. He was photographed with the album cover, a testament to its authenticity. The Blue Hawk label, founded in 2013, highlights the talent emerging from the university’s music program and takes its name from the school’s mascot.
Excitingly, these students will be showcased at the “Blue Hawk Boardwalk Jam” during the Light of Day WinterFest on January 15. This event will feature various artists affiliated with Blue Hawk Records, providing them an opportunity to share their creativity with a broader audience.
