Ball State University is hosting a special event this spring as part of its Arts Alive! series. Multidisciplinary artist Justin Favela will present at Sursa Performance Hall on Wednesday, March 19 at 6 p.m. This event is free and open to all, and will include a catered reception afterward. If you’re driving, parking is available at McKinley Parking Garage, which is free after 7 p.m.
Favela, based in Las Vegas, is known for his large-scale installations that reflect themes of culture, identity, and community. His vibrant works, inspired by piñatas, have been showcased in national and international venues, from the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis to El Museo del Barrio in New York. Notably, he is a 2021 Joan Mitchell Foundation Fellow and currently holds a residency with the Kohler Arts and Industry program in Wisconsin.
Dr. Seth Beckman, dean of the College of Fine Arts (CFA), expressed excitement for the event, stating, “Justin Favela’s work offers a vibrant exploration of culture and identity. We’re pleased to share this dynamic artistic experience with the community.”
Favela’s art engages deeply with pop culture and Latinx traditions, using familiar materials to create immersive experiences. He aims to challenge traditional art norms and highlight the beauty in everyday life. “As a multidisciplinary artist, my work explores authenticity, place, and identity,” he said.
The Arts Alive! series is designed to make art and entertainment accessible to students and the local community. It features a variety of cultural events from the David Owsley Museum of Art, the School of Art, the School of Music, and more.
In recent years, community engagement through art has gained attention. Studies show that towns and cities with a vibrant arts scene experience increased social cohesion and economic growth. It’s more important now than ever to foster connections through creativity, especially in our fast-paced digital world.
