A tropical getaway is coming to Columbus. Simon’s Bar will open a Tiki-themed lounge on the second floor of Budd Dairy Food Hall this Saturday. Nick Smith, the beverage manager, explains the idea behind the bar. “We wanted a place where people could escape the cold, unpredictable weather of Columbus,” he says. “It’s all about that feeling of paradise.”
The Tiki pop-up isn’t just a one-time thing. Smith plans to keep it running through the summer, offering a slice of tropical bliss every Friday and Saturday from 6 PM to midnight. “We think people will love the experience,” he adds.
Manager Jeremy Hughes emphasizes the focus on quality drinks. “It’s not only about the theme; it’s about the cocktails themselves,” he says. The pop-up will feature a menu with 12 special drinks that can’t be found anywhere else in the food hall. One standout is the Toucan Slam, a delicious concoction of Middlewest Pumpernickel Rye, Campari, pineapple, lime, and cinnamon. They’ll also have a refreshing non-alcoholic option: the N.A. Pier Pressure Colada, made from pineapple juice, coconut cream, lime, and demerara brown sugar.
The Tiki theme came to life when Hughes visited food halls in Denver. He saw how they successfully incorporated themed bars, and it sparked his creativity. “Tiki is a fun vibe, and we hope it draws more traffic to Simon’s Bar,” he says. Historically, themed venues have a way of connecting with customers, and Hughes aims to capture that spirit in Columbus.
This new offering could benefit from recent trends in dining. According to a survey by the National Restaurant Association, nearly 54% of consumers are looking for unique dining experiences. Hughes hopes that the Tiki pop-up will bring more local residents into Budd Dairy, allowing them to enjoy vibrant food and drinks. “We want everyone to feel the genuine hospitality we provide,” he notes. “When you’re passionate about what you do, it shows.”
The Tiki-themed bar aims to be a festive retreat for folks in Columbus, especially as warmer weather approaches. With its unique cocktails and inviting atmosphere, it could become a favorite hangout for many.
