Rush’s Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson delighted fans at the Juno Awards with a surprise live performance featuring their new drummer, Anika Nilles. They kicked off the show with “Finding My Way,” the opening track from their very first album in 1974, an interesting choice since Neil Peart, the band’s legendary drummer, joined after that album was recorded.
Nilles, a former Jeff Beck drummer, faced a challenging debut but shone brightly on stage, showcasing her skills on a massive drum kit emblazoned with the Rush logo. Lee and Lifeson appeared rejuvenated after their long break, with Lee hitting high notes reminiscent of their early days. Loren Gold also joined them, adding depth to the performance. Vintage footage of Peart played in the background, making it a heartfelt tribute.
This performance marked the first time Lee and Lifeson performed as Rush since their R40 tour ended in 2015. In the years since, they’ve reunited only occasionally for special tributes. After the show, Lee explained how they chose their setlist: “If we have to choose one song, it’s almost impossible. We have so many,” he said, highlighting the band’s extensive catalog.
What’s notable about their upcoming tour—the Fifty Something tour—is that it transformed from a modest 12-date run into an impressive series of 58 shows across North America. Each concert promises to offer a unique experience with a rotating selection of around 35 songs, giving fans a glimpse of their rich history and evolution over the years.
As they gear up for this tour, it’s clear that Rush is more than just a band; they represent a legacy. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see what Lee, Lifeson, and Nilles will bring to the stage, particularly how they will continue to honor Peart’s memory throughout the tour.
