SEATTLE — Exciting news for soccer fans! The Sounders and Reign FC have come together to create something unique: a floating soccer field on the waterfront during the World Cup.
This project, named the “Seattle Soccer Celebration powered by Lenovo,” will feature a specially designed soccer field on a boat, docked near Pier 62 in Waterfront Park. Throughout the tournament, this venue will host fan events, cultural activities, and watch parties for the matches.
Hugh Weber, president of Seattle’s soccer clubs, said, “This is a defining moment for our city. It’s not just a fan experience; it’s a global expression of who we are.” This initiative aims to celebrate Seattle’s role as a host city for the FIFA World Cup in 2026.
In collaboration with the RAVE Foundation and Friends of Waterfront Park, the floating pitch aims to promote youth soccer. It’s part of the “52 Fields” project that strives to build 52 mini soccer fields in underserved areas before the World Cup. Ashley Fosberg from Sounders FC emphasizes this initiative is all about creating access and joy for children.
Moreover, the waterfront will serve as one of Seattle’s official fan celebration sites during the World Cup. Joy Shigaki, CEO of Friends of Waterfront Park, hopes this project will bring together both locals and visitors.
Beyond soccer, the waterfront festival plans to offer free events, youth activities, and entertainment. The floating venue could welcome up to 100,000 fans over the tournament’s duration, running from June 11 to July 6.
