As a woman in my 40s, I can’t help but feel excited when I spot Rice Krispies treats at parties or bake sales. They’re a nostalgic delight loved by many, and Katarina Su has taken that joy further with her business, Kaisu Bakehouse.
Katarina previously ran a dumpling pop-up in Atlanta but decided to switch gears and focus on something sweeter. “Rice Krispies treats are unique,” she says. In Atlanta, she noticed a lack of Asian flavors. She wanted to bring some of her childhood favorites into her treats, incorporating flavors like black sesame, White Rabbit candy, and strawberry Pocky.
Her top seller? The matcha strawberry. “It’s visually stunning,” she adds. And her s’mores flavor captures the essence of childhood nostalgia for many.
Since moving to San Diego at the end of 2025, Katarina has been busy. You can find various flavors on her website and catch her at local businesses and coffee shops. Her next pop-up is on Valentine’s Day at Kendra Scott in Fashion Valley, followed by another one at Easy Does It coffee shop in March.
Katarina wants to spread joy with her treats. “I love seeing how happy they make people,” she reflects. Her mission is simple: to add a sprinkle of happiness and nostalgia to everyone’s day.
Switching gears, let’s talk about another exciting addition to San Diego’s food scene: Jaybird Superette. This New England-style bodega is launched by Peter Kobulnicky and Hannah Kinney, both hospitality veterans. They’ll serve morning coffee and pastries, lunch sandwiches, and an array of snacks through the evening, focusing on unique products from small producers.
For instance, they plan to feature biodynamic wines and local craft beers, which appeal to those eager to try something new. Kinney chose San Diego for its beautiful weather and vibrant food culture. “It’s the nicest city in America,” she adds.
The bodega quietly opened on February 1, with a grand opening set for Valentine’s Day weekend. Their initial hours will be Wednesday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
In addition to these newcomers, keep an eye on local favorites. George’s at the Cove recently underwent renovations and will reopen with a fresh look on February 6, featuring a special half-off wine promo. Meanwhile, Valentine’s Day specials at Mastro’s Ocean Club and Hudson & Nash aim to create romantic experiences for couples.
San Diego’s food scene is buzzing with excitement as new flavors and experiences are introduced. So whether you’re craving nostalgic treats or innovative bites, there’s something tasty waiting for you.
