Nasa astronaut Donald Pettit recently shared breathtaking images of the Maha Kumbh Mela from the International Space Station (ISS). His photos showcase the event’s nighttime glow along the Ganges River, highlighting the largest human gathering in the world.
In his post, Pettit described the scene, saying it resembled “a star in space with other stars gathering,” creating a stunning visual of unity. The images captured the incredible scale of the event, which has drawn millions of devotees from all over the globe.
The Maha Kumbh Mela is currently underway in Prayagraj, India. Just 14 days into the festival, over 110 million people have already attended. This event occurs every 12 years and is expected to last until February 26, 2025. It is a vibrant celebration of faith and community spirit.
Devotees come to the Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the now-extinct Saraswati rivers meet, to perform a sacred ritual known as the holy dip. This purifying bath symbolizes the washing away of sins and the quest for moksha, or liberation. It is a central practice rooted in Sanatan Dharma.

Even in chilly weather, people are united in their spiritual journey. The upcoming Mauni Amavasya on January 29 is expected to bring an even larger crowd, with authorities preparing for about 450 million visitors. This promises to be a historic event for India, showcasing the power of collective spirituality that transcends barriers of language and tradition.
