This summer, Sicamous is shifting its events to Main Street, creating a new buzz in the downtown area. A key highlight is the Canada Day Block Party, moving from Beach Park due to ongoing construction on the Bruhn Bridge. The party will now take place at the west end of Main Street, near the old roundabout.
Recreation manager Jamie Sherlock noted, “The community wants a lively downtown. We aim to attract people to businesses and restaurants here.” This year will also see the return of the popular Canada Day Road Hockey Tournament, which many locals have been eager to see again. Sherlock is currently looking for referees to help out with the tournament. They will be compensated for their time.
Expect plenty of festive activities, including live music, games, bounce houses, and beverage gardens, all set up along Main Street past the Narrows Smokehouse. Notably, the event won’t disturb local businesses, as the closure will be well-managed.
In addition to Canada Day festivities, two car shows are also moving to Main Street on June 29 and July 27. This relocation helps protect the recently repaired ball diamonds in Finlayson Park. Sherlock emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses during these events, stating, “We want to ensure both the car show and our businesses thrive.”
During the street closures, Paradise, Shuswap, and Riverside avenues will remain open. Traffic control will be in place to guide visitors to local shops and designated parking areas.
Another change is the relocation of Music in the Park, which will now occur at Finlayson Park and stay there for the duration of the bridge construction. This move not only ensures that events continue but also provides a cozy atmosphere for music lovers.
Engaging with the community, these changes highlight local demands for more vibrant summer events. According to a recent survey, 76% of residents expressed a desire for increased activities downtown, signaling strong community support for these initiatives.
As summer approaches, these shifts are expected to bring in more visitors and boost local businesses, transforming Sicamous into a hub of activity and connection.
