Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently marked a significant moment by launching the first direct Vande Bharat Express between Jammu and Srinagar. This train promises to enhance connectivity in the region, slashing travel time to under five hours.
With 20 coaches, the train will run six days a week, covering about 266 kilometers. It departs from Jammu Tawi at 6:20 AM, reaching Srinagar by 11:10 AM. The return journey leaves Srinagar at 8:00 AM, arriving back in Jammu by 12:40 PM. This new service will greatly benefit commuters who often face road closures during rainy and winter seasons.
The Vande Bharat Express will make stops at Katra, Reasi, and Banihal, easing the journey for passengers. The initiative to expand the train service comes after a robust response to the existing Katra-Srinagar train, which was previously launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This new route is part of the longer Jammu-Baramulla rail line, which has been in the works for decades. Historical milestones include Prime Minister Indira Gandhi laying the foundation stone in 1983 and a 2005 inauguration of the Jammu-Udhampur segment after years of delays.
As trains grow in popularity, they play a significant role in transporting local produce, especially Kashmir’s famous apples and cherries. So far, the service has transported over two crore kg of apples to Delhi, with high demand for cherries as well.
The use of advanced technology is another highlight. This Vande Bharat train is designed to endure extreme temperatures, featuring specially designed systems to prevent water from freezing, making it reliable year-round. Vaishnaw noted that the train includes higher-spec electronics and has 3,000 microchips installed to ensure smooth operations.
Public reactions have been overwhelmingly positive. Many people have praised the efficiency and comfort of the service, with more than five lakh passengers traveling on the Katra-Srinagar line alone since its inception. This wave of positive feedback indicates a shift in how people perceive travel in this beautiful yet challenging terrain.
The Vande Bharat Express represents not just improved transport but also hope for greater economic opportunities in the region. By facilitating easier access to tourism and trade, it rekindles interest in traveling to Kashmir.
