Richmond might not be the flashiest foodie city, but it has a lot to offer. The culinary scene is spread out, which makes finding great bites a bit of a treasure hunt. That’s part of the fun! Many locals enjoy exploring hidden gems or popular pop-ups. When you stumble upon an incredible dish, like chicken and rice that exceeds expectations, it feels like a win.

This weekend, Richmond is revving up its food culture with the 6th annual Taste of Richmond Experience. This event showcases around 40 local restaurants, breweries, and bakeries, drawing attention to the city’s culinary diversity. It takes place on Saturday, March 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Richmond Memorial Auditorium.

The Richmond Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with the Economic Development Commission and local nonprofits, aims to connect residents with local flavors. The ticket price is $35, which covers unlimited tastings and makes it affordable for everyone aged 13 and over.

Diana Wear, vice chair of the Economic Development Commission, emphasizes the event’s importance: “We want to highlight the many flavors and businesses in our city.” The goal is to strengthen the local economy by supporting small businesses.

Tom Cloman of the Richmond Farmer’s Markets adds that events like this help to “reintroduce” the community’s assets that often go unnoticed. He envisions a permanent space where food and art come together, creating a lively hub for residents.

In 2020, many culinary events stumbled or paused due to the pandemic. For Richmond, previous Taste events shifted formats, but this year, the focus is back on community togetherness. After an outdoor political rally at the same location, the hope is that the Taste of Richmond builds on that excitement.

The lineup includes a diverse array of foods—from smoky barbecue and tropical smoothies to pastries and international dishes reflecting Jamaica, Laos, and the Philippines. Local drinks, including craft beers and mocktails, will also be featured. Vendors participating this year include popular names like Sailing Goat, Rubicon Bakers, and CJ’s BBQ & Fish.

Despite some slow ticket sales, optimism remains high. Wear notes that people often prefer to buy tickets at the door, which is a positive sign of local interest. David Friedrich, owner of Pickles and Smoke, acknowledges the challenges of running a food business today. He hopes events like this encourage residents to support local eateries directly, rather than relying on delivery apps.

“You get a sense of community when you’re at these events,” he shares. “That feeling is priceless.”

Meanwhile, new vendors like Cherie Amour from Lemur International Inc, which specializes in natural ingredients, are excited about the shorter event format. “I think it will create a more intimate experience, which is great for connecting with people.”

First-time vendor Carmen Wong of Green Panda Eats is just as enthusiastic. “I’m looking forward to showcasing our Richmond Pride and bringing joy to everyone who stops by.”

As Richmond continues to carve its niche in the food scene, events like Taste of Richmond remind us that every bite tells a story. For anyone looking for an adventure in culinary delight, this is one experience not to miss!
