Experience the Flavor: Join Us for the Soul Food Sampling Soft Launch at the African American Museum of Crisfield!

CRISFIELD — A new nonprofit focused on African American history and culture is gearing up for its first event during Black History Month. The African American Museum of Crisfield (AAMOC) will host its inaugural Soul Food Sampling on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Crisfield Elks Pride Lodge 194 on South Fourth Street.

Previously held at the Corbin Studio & Gallery, this event offers a taste of soul food, celebrating African American culinary traditions. Attendees will also have the chance to explore the upcoming cookbook, Food From the Soul, with pre-order options available.

Music will fill the air, showcasing a range of African American history through songs—from spirituals to modern interpretations. Artistic displays will feature both local and national historical figures.

While the museum plans to establish a permanent home, it will continue to host community events like this. Everyone is encouraged to come, especially families, elders, educators, and artists who can contribute to the museum’s mission.

According to AAMOC’s mission statement, “The African American Museum of Crisfield is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting African American history in Crisfield, Somerset County, the Eastern Shore, and beyond.” Through exhibits, programs, music, and oral histories, AAMOC aims to educate and inspire future generations.

In a recent survey by the Pew Research Center, 56% of Americans believe it’s important to include diverse histories in education. Events like this aim to address those gaps, offering a space to honor and learn about African American heritage. As social media trends show, many are eager for platforms that celebrate cultural history, with hashtags like #BlackHistoryMonth trending annually.

For more details, you can follow AAMOC on Facebook or reach out to Robin Rayford at 248-709-3897. If you have a recipe for the cookbook, feel free to contact Jeanne Pittman at aamoc25@gmail.com or drop it off at the Corbin Gallery, 4 East Main Street.
