SDSU is gearing up for an exciting event—China Night! Taking place at the Dakota Bank Center in Brookings, this vibrant celebration begins at 6 p.m. It promises a mix of cultural performances, fun activities, and, of course, delicious Chinese food.
Tickets are available for purchase at the Student Union from 12 to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, or online through TicketMaster and the Dakota Bank Center website. You can even buy them at the box office on the day of the event. According to event manager Kelly Dahlhoff, attendees only need to bring themselves and their tickets—everything else will be taken care of. “There will be food and drinks, so you don’t need to bring anything from outside,” she shared.
Guests can look forward to a variety of authentic dishes like Chongqing spicy chicken, cumin beef, and fried dumplings, all provided by local favorites Lao Szechuan Hot Pot Buffet and WokN Go. Vegetarian options will also be available.
The president of the Chinese Students and Scholars Association, Jiahui Yuan, explained that the goal is to showcase Chinese culture and traditions to the SDSU community. “We want to promote understanding between different cultures,” Yuan said. This event aims to bring together students, faculty, and residents to enjoy and learn about Chinese culture.
One highlight of the night will be performances from around the globe, mainly featuring artists from China. Yizi Zhang, the association’s vice president, emphasized that the Lion Dance is a must-see. “The Lion Dance is a key part of the Chinese New Year celebrations across many cities in China,” she noted.
Yuan pointed out the importance of these performances. “They display both traditional and modern elements of Chinese art, like dance and music, helping viewers connect with our culture through stories and emotions.”
Local leaders, including Mayor Ope Niemeyer and SDSU President Barry Dunn, will also make special appearances. They, along with the vibrant community, are eager to celebrate and embrace this cultural event, making China Night a wonderful opportunity for everyone involved.
This type of cultural exchange is becoming increasingly important in our diverse society.
