According to New Atlas, traditional holograms use a system called a volumetric display. To solve this problem, Dr. Elodie Bouzbib and her team at the Public University of Navarra replaced the rigid surface with flexible elastic strips. This soft material allows users to interact without the risk of injury. You can use natural hand gestures—like pinching and rotating—to engage with the holographic images, much like you would on a smartphone.

In trials, 18 participants reported a strong preference for this touch-based interaction over traditional controls like a 3D mouse. They found it more intuitive and satisfying.
