In a world where sci-fi has long imagined flexible screens, Samsung is ready to make that a reality with its new model, the Galaxy Z TriFold. This smartphone folds in two places, transforming from a compact device to a screen comparable to an iPad—all while fitting into your pocket.

Unveiled at CES in Las Vegas, the TriFold aims to revisit the idea of what smartphones can be. It’s a bold move for Samsung, which remains the world’s largest smartphone manufacturer. The initial release focuses on a test market in South Korea before a broader U.S. launch.

The design is sleek when opened up but feels bulky when closed. While Samsung hasn’t announced pricing yet, its existing foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, starts at around $2,000. Tech analyst Liz Lee noted this new model serves as a “strategic pilot” to analyze consumer response to innovative technology.

Samsung hopes the TriFold will blend productivity and portability. With its 10-inch screen, it gives users room to juggle multiple tasks. Fans of multitasking will appreciate that apps can be used side by side, reminiscent of desktop experiences. Samsung’s Gemini assistant can even help manage apps more easily.

Yet, while the TriFold feels lightweight when open, it’s cumbersome when folded. The first versions of folding smartphones faced significant design challenges, such as creases on the screen and subpar camera quality. In contrast, the TriFold boasts cameras on par with Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra, which is an impressive upgrade.

Despite these advancements, Samsung still needs to clarify the unique need for larger screens in everyday life—existing models already perform many of the same functions. Foldable phones represent just a small segment of the smartphone market, even after seven years of development. As per Consumer Intelligence Research Partners, most U.S. consumers replace their phones only when absolutely necessary, limiting the audience for these premium devices.

However, the foldable trend appears to be gaining momentum, with every major Android brand now featuring a foldable option. Even Apple is reportedly gearing up to enter the fray. Samsung’s Drew Blackard has stated that the ongoing evolution of phone designs will allow different users to prefer various shapes and functionalities, keeping innovation alive.

As smartphone technology continues to evolve, devices like the TriFold remind us that there’s still room for creative ideas in a space that seems saturated. While the journey may come with challenges, the excitement of what’s possible keeps both consumers and manufacturers engaged in this ever-changing landscape.
