Indian Railways is set to introduce its first sleeper version of the Vande Bharat Express, enhancing long-distance travel between Patna and New Delhi. This new train will cover nearly 1,000 km in about eight hours, reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. The launch aims to provide a faster and more comfortable overnight travel option for passengers.
The sleeper service is expected to start before the New Year. The first train set will leave from the Bharat Earth Movers Limited factory in Bengaluru on December 12, 2025. Once dispatched, the train will undergo trials to ensure it meets safety and performance standards.
Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted that this train is fully designed and built in India. He expressed confidence that the new sleeper service will greatly improve medium and long-distance train travel.
This version of the Vande Bharat will consist of 16 sleeper coaches tailored for overnight journeys. Unlike the current model that offers only chair seating, this train will feature sleeper berths for a more relaxing experience. It will also include modern amenities such as automatic doors, bio-digester toilets, and well-lit berths. Safety is a key focus, with crash-worthy designs and advanced anti-collision systems in place.
The Patna-Delhi sleeper service will operate six days a week, reflecting the heavy demand on this popular route. It can accommodate 827 passengers across different classes, including AC 1st Class, AC 2-tier, and AC 3-tier coaches. Although ticket prices haven’t been disclosed, they are expected to be comparable to those of the Rajdhani Express.
For travelers between Patna and Delhi, this new service promises to streamline overnight journeys, allowing them to avoid hotel bookings. It will be particularly useful during festivals, business trips, and short visits to the capital. Passengers can look forward to a clean and efficient travel experience that rivals both trains and buses.
According to recent data from the Indian Railways, passenger demand on this route has been growing steadily, with over 15 million travelers reported last year alone. This surge in demand underscores the need for more comfortable travel options.
Overall, the introduction of the sleeper Vande Bharat Express could reshape how people view overnight travel in India. By combining speed, comfort, and safety, it aims to elevate the travel experience for all passengers.
