Indian Railways is set to change overnight travel in India with its first Vande Bharat sleeper trains, launching in January 2026. These new trains, designed to reach speeds of up to 180 km/h, will be the fastest overnight options in the country. They promise not only swiftness but also the comfort and features that have made daytime Vande Bharat express trains so popular.
Created by BEML in Bengaluru and the Integral Coach Factory in Perambur, the 16-coach prototype includes modern sleeper berths, automatic doors, better fire safety, onboard entertainment, and advanced toilets. Unlike the daytime trains, these sleeper versions are designed specifically for overnight travel, catering to those taking long journeys spanning 800 to 1,000 kilometers.
The second prototype has passed rigorous tests, including trials in varying railway zones. During these tests, the train consistently maintained its top speed while showcasing stability and braking performance. It has now received approval for regular service.
Officials have announced that the first sleeper service will launch with at least two sleeper coaches. A second train is undergoing final preparations in Ahmedabad, with plans to roll out eight more sleeper trains by March 2026. Key routes like Bengaluru to Kanyakumari and Delhi to Mumbai are being prioritized, potentially reducing travel time by 3 to 5 hours compared to the existing Rajdhani and Duronto trains.
These new sleeper trains feature high-tech designs, including automatic doors and KAVACH safety systems. As India strides towards complete electrification and high-speed rail, the Vande Bharat sleeper trains will fill the gap between traditional overnight options and upcoming bullet trains. This evolution aims to offer millions of travelers faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys starting in January 2026.
Experts in transport and logistics have emphasized the importance of such trains in modern travel. According to the Ministry of Railways, the popularity of sleeper services is poised to increase, resonating well with passengers looking for convenience in long-distance travel.
As excitement builds around this new service, social media is buzzing. Users are eager to share their thoughts, making #VandeBharatSleeper a trending topic. This reflects a growing interest in rail travel innovations across India, highlighting how these developments can transform commuting experiences on a grand scale.
