Indian Railways is gearing up to introduce the Vande Bharat 4.0 trains in about 18 months. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav shared this exciting news at the 16th International Railway Equipment Exhibition 2025. He highlighted that these next-gen trains will boost speed and comfort while meeting top global standards.
Vande Bharat 4.0 aims to set new benchmarks in technology and passenger experience. Enhancements will include better restrooms, seating, and overall coach design. Currently, India operates the Vande Bharat 3.0, which already matches international standards for speed and efficiency. In fact, it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 52 seconds, beating the best trains from Japan and Europe that do it in 54 seconds, according to the minister.
Looking ahead, Indian Railways plans to create 7,000 kilometers of rail corridors by 2047, with trains on these routes expected to travel at speeds of up to 350 km/h. This ambitious project aims to revolutionize train travel in India.
The first Vande Bharat Express was launched in 2019 and is a product of the Make in India initiative, showcasing indigenous technology. Since then, the service has gained popularity, now operating 156 Vande Bharat services, along with Amrit and Namo Bharat services.
The upcoming Vande Bharat 4.0 will also focus on safety and comfort. For instance, the technology will improve restroom hygiene and make facilities more accessible for people with disabilities. Enhanced suspension systems are on the way, promising a smoother journey for all passengers.
Experts believe that the advances in train technology could significantly reduce traffic congestion and help meet the growing travel demands in India. Recent surveys show that passengers are excited about these upgrades and see them as a step towards modernizing public transport.
