The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance is bringing the acclaimed rock musical “RENT” to Kauaʻi. After a successful run at Mānoa’s Kennedy Theatre, this vibrant production will take the stage at the Kauaʻi Community College Performing Arts Center from August 8-10.
Director Joshua “Baba” Tavares expressed his excitement to connect with the Kauaʻi community. Tavares, an assistant professor of acting, has his roots in Kona. Notably, he played the role of Angel, a vital character in “RENT,” during the national tour that ran from September 2016 to May 2022.
The Kauaʻi shows mark the first time this production has performed off Oʻahu, inviting new audiences to experience a story that speaks to many, especially through a Hawaiian perspective. Reviewers have praised the show for its heartfelt portrayal of themes like love, loss, and resilience, as well as its depiction of challenges faced by young artists.
“RENT,” written by Jonathan Larson, tells the story of struggling artists in 1990s New York City as they navigate life during the HIV/AIDS crisis. The musical debuted off-Broadway in 1996, just a day after Larson’s untimely death. Though set in a specific time, the issues it addresses—such as homelessness and the search for identity—remain relevant today. Tavares notes, “Are we talking about the ’80s and ’90s or today?”
He adds, “RENT” is not just about hardship; it’s also about hope, love, and tolerance. The spirit of “aloha” is central to this interpretation.
The production involves over 40 cast and crew members, including students and staff from various programs. Their collaboration showcases the diversity of talent at the university.
