Mumbai is set to become a major player in climate action during the inaugural Mumbai Climate Week (MCW), happening from February 17 to 19, 2026. This event marks the first significant climate leadership platform in the Global South. Over 100 institutions and more than 400 speakers, including well-known figures like Bill Gates and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, will participate.
The venue for MCW is the Jio World Convention Centre, but the excitement won’t stop there. The city will host a variety of events focused on climate awareness, engaging both leaders and community members.
The Maharashtra government is backing the initiative, along with NGO Project Mumbai. Their goal? To make Mumbai a testing ground for climate solutions that could inspire other cities in India and beyond.
Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, emphasized that this event highlights India’s commitment to tackling climate issues. He stated, “As Mumbai hosts leaders from across the globe, we’re showing that Maharashtra is ready to collaborate for a cleaner, safer future.”
Shishir Joshi, the CEO of Project Mumbai, called MCW a “landmark citizen-driven movement.” This event brings together ministers, businesses, students, and volunteers, embodying a true community effort in climate leadership.
The MCW will feature a variety of activities, including leadership discussions and innovation challenges, aimed at generating practical solutions. A special event on the first day will showcase global innovators working on pressing environmental issues.
Alongside the main events, numerous activities are already underway in neighborhoods and campuses, such as art events and public sustainability fairs. The blend of formal discussions and community involvement aims to encourage everyday climate conversations.
As we face increasing climate challenges, events like MCW showcase how collaboration can drive significant change. According to a 2022 study, 78% of global citizens believe that addressing climate change is one of the most pressing issues of our time. With events like MCW, the hope is that enthusiasm for climate action will only grow, echoing the sentiments of citizens worldwide.
