Howard University celebrated its 101st Homecoming with Yardfest 2025, themed “One of One.” This yearly festival gathered students and alumni for a day filled with music, fashion, and a strong sense of community on the university’s historic yard.
The atmosphere was electric. Notable past performers include icons like Jay-Z and Ludacris, but the real stars were the attendees. Kenny Harris, an alumnus from 2012, cherished the sense of belonging, saying, “It’s a family reunion. You come as you are and leave better.”
Pat France, who graduated in 1986, reflected on how Yardfest has evolved. “We didn’t call it Yardfest, but the energy was just as vibrant. Now, it feels more polished.” Her memories highlight a tradition steeped in love and academic excellence.
Sophomore Winston Owens, a photographer, shared how artists mingle effortlessly with students. “They just chat like friends,” he said. This connection adds a unique layer to the event, making it more than just a festival; it’s a true community gathering.
Fashion is also a key part of Yardfest. Freshman Azariah Powell discussed planning her outfit well in advance, and even a last-minute change didn’t dampen her excitement. “I’m ready to celebrate our community,” she said. Fellow freshman Akeelah Shaw echoed this sentiment, eagerly anticipating her first Howard homecoming.
The excitement culminates on game day, when the Howard Bison will face off against the Morgan State Bears. “We’ve never lost a party,” quipped Harris, highlighting the playful spirit that defines the event.
Historically, Howard’s Homecoming has been a gathering point for African American culture and pride. The roots of such events trace back to a time when alumni needed a reason to return, making it a cherished tradition that fosters connection among generations.
Social media buzz is also evident, with hashtags trending as current students and alumni share their experiences. This ongoing legacy and vibrant community spirit ensure that Yardfest remains a standout moment each year.
