Disney is shaking things up in a galaxy far, far away. Starting April 29, 2026, Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will introduce beloved characters from the original trilogy, like Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia. These icons will roam the park, adding charm and nostalgia to the experience alongside the existing characters, such as R2-D2 and Chewbacca.
This change marks a significant shift. When Galaxy’s Edge opened in 2019, it focused on characters from Disney’s sequel trilogy, such as Rey and Kylo Ren. However, the cultural impact of the original trilogy has proven to be much stronger. Disney recognized this trend and is shifting the timeline back to incorporate characters and elements that fans love most.
The new layout will showcase a broader timeline, spanning the Galactic Civil War to the Resistance and First Order eras. While Rey and the newer characters will still be part of the Resistance section, classic figures are set to take the spotlight in another area.
Interestingly, there are reasons beyond nostalgia guiding this decision. According to a recent survey by Insider, nearly 70% of Star Wars fans preferred content featuring original trilogy characters. The park’s rides, like the popular Rise of the Resistance, will remain unchanged, but fans can expect updates to shops and restaurants, including classic tunes like the Cantina Band at Oga’s Cantina.
This isn’t Disney’s first attempt at reworking its Star Wars offerings. In 2023, the company closed the immersive Galactic Starcruiser hotel after just two years. High costs limited its popularity, but creating experiences that resonate with fans—even the classics—might just be the key to Disney’s success.
As Star Wars prepares to return to theaters with new content this year, these changes in Disneyland could reignite excitement among fans. With the combination of classic characters and iconic music, this could be a thrilling new chapter for Star Wars enthusiasts.
