Experience the Magic: Madison Ballet’s ‘Mozart & More’ Redefines Dance with Unforgettable Performances!

Fog and lightning offer a stunning backdrop to Madison Ballet’s “Mozart and More,” currently showing at MYArts’ Starlight Theater. Dancers emerge from unexpected spots, as the proscenium opens up to showcase a live string quartet.

One standout piece is “The Hour Before,” which earned national praise for artistic director Ja’Malik. This choreography highlights the dancers’ athleticism and creativity, pushing the boundaries of traditional ballet.

The performance kicks off with tick-tock movements that create an intimate atmosphere, emphasizing themes of time. Dancers stretch and pivot, tracing shapes like shadows on a sundial, even managing to convey time at night.

Another highlight is “The Time That Runs Away,” choreographed by Stephanie Martinez. This piece takes us on a whimsical journey through time that combines humor with emotional depth. Each segment offers its own unique movements, some playful and others tender, capturing moments reminiscent of street tango.

Madison Ballet presents “Weibermacht,” meaning “power of women” in German. Despite challenges on opening night, the performance shines. With humor reminiscent of “Fantasia,” it playfully critiques societal norms while showcasing the talents of its female performers.

In “Mo…Z…Art,” also choreographed by Ja’Malik, humor plays a pivotal role. Here, dancers manipulate frames and themes of “high art,” challenging norms about creativity and expression. The use of bright lights helps shatter the fourth wall, prompting the audience to reflect on their own judgments.

Through shades of nude costumes and strong imagery, the dance explores themes of gender and power. One striking moment involves a female dancer’s bold expression of freedom, confronting societal expectations while the male dancers look on in surprise.

This performance allows for a fresh look at ballet, embracing diverse perspectives and promoting equity in a traditionally rigid space. As contemporary ballet continues to evolve, it encourages viewers to rethink norms and envision a more inclusive future.

In “Mozart & More,” Madison Ballet takes confident strides into this new frontier, blending tradition with innovation and meaning.
