The aurora borealis, or northern lights, is set to dazzle observers in the Austin area tonight, as confirmed by the National Weather Service. Meteorologist Harrison Tran shared insights about this exciting event, emphasizing the rarity of such views in Texas.
“Aurora forecasting can be tricky,” Tran noted, but recent solar activity has increased the chances of witnessing these spectacular lights. This activity is linked to coronal mass ejections—huge bursts of solar material that sometimes head toward Earth. When they do, the Earth’s magnetic field directs these high-energy particles towards our atmosphere, making the aurora visible even in states far from the poles.
Typically, you’d need to be closer to the North or South Poles to see such phenomena. However, strong solar emissions have recently made it possible to catch a glimpse of the lights as far south as Texas. “We’re at the peak of a solar cycle, which means the sun is particularly active right now,” said Tran.
Observing the aurora in Texas means seeing the top layers of this wonder. Texans can expect to perceive a red glow, as solar particles interact with oxygen high in the atmosphere. In contrast, those further north see a broader spectrum of colors due to different atmospheric reactions.
The best viewing times will be after sunset but before midnight, when experts predict low cloud coverage. If you live in or near the city, buildings and light pollution may block your view, but you don’t have to venture far from downtown to spot the display. Tran himself lives in suburban South Austin, where the lights are visible even against the city backdrop.
