Experience the Magic of ‘ASCEND’: Point Park University’s Multimedia Spectacle Lights Up Downtown Pittsburgh!

Keisha Lalama wears many hats. She’s the interim dean of Point Park University’s School of Theatre, Film and Animation and the managing director of the Pittsburgh Playhouse. But she’s mostly recognized for her work as a choreographer. Her recent creation, “ASCEND,” is an immersive dance event that transforms the Playhouse into a captivating multimedia experience.

“ASCEND” invites up to 100 audience members at a time into the theater, where a massive 10-foot circular screen hovers overhead. This screen showcases everything from abstract visuals to stunning natural imagery, making the performance feel like a journey through the four essential elements: earth, air, fire, and water.

The show features six Point Park students who embody characters representing each element. With two rotating casts, the performers often engage with the audience, encouraging them to join in the dance. Each segment is a visual treat. For instance, dancers dressed in soil-colored robes evoke the essence of Earth, moving gracefully to haunting music by composer Ryan McMasters.

The portrayal of Fire is electric, as masked dancers twist and turn like flames. There’s even a glimpse of artistry with dancers on stilts, evoking the resilience of trees, all accompanied by live drumming. The Water segment brings a fluid elegance, culminating in a breathtaking aerial performance that captivates everyone watching.

Lalama shared that “ASCEND” has been eight years in the making, co-created with her sons, Jacob and Jaxon White. Their collaboration adds a personal touch to this ambitious project. Throughout the performance, references to iconic art, such as John Tenniel’s illustrations from “Alice in Wonderland,” blend creativity with classic inspiration.

This unique show aims not just to entertain but to engage audiences emotionally and physically, inviting them into a world of artistry that feels both contemporary and timeless.
