Experience the Magic of Ocean City’s Wonderland Pier: Discover Its Legacy Through YouTube and the Man & Dog Show!

Gillian’s Wonderland Pier, a beloved spot on the Ocean City Boardwalk, has closed after 94 years of fun and memories. For many, it was a cherished part of childhood summer days. One standout feature was the Man and Dog animatronic show, bringing smiles to visitors for decades.

When the pier shut down last season, some fans decided to keep its spirit alive. Among them is Andrew Boylan, who grew up visiting Wonderland in the ’90s. Now, he’s helping document and revive that magic online. He began working there in 2012, climbing from ride operator to maintenance crew member. His favorite attraction? The Man and Dog show, of course.

At first, Boylan shared behind-the-scenes upkeep of the animatronics on YouTube, revealing the charm of the retro show. Little did he know, this would attract a community of fans. “I thought I was alone in this,” he later shared. Now, he’s part of a lively group of animatronic enthusiasts who connect both online and in person.

One notable member is eleven-year-old Jason Barr, who found a passion for animatronics after seeing the show. Boylan let him watch the setup, sparking a friendship with others who share this unique interest. Anthony Giovenella, 17, started visiting Wonderland more after discovering Boylan’s videos. He appreciates the effort to restore the animatronics to their 90s glory, even though he didn’t grow up with them.

While the group shares a love for the past, it also provides friendships and support. Many of them, including Boylan and Barr, have different forms of neurodivergence, which can make socializing tricky. But they found a welcoming space with their shared interests. They often gather to discuss and work on the animatronics, creating a supportive community.

Studies show that shared interests can help forge strong bonds, especially among those who might feel isolated. According to a recent survey by the American Psychological Association, 62% of participants reported that having a specific hobby connected them to others. This community exemplifies that finding people who share your passion can create lifelong friendships.

In celebrating Wonderland’s 60th anniversary this summer, the group has plans for a series of videos highlighting memories and the beloved Man and Dog show. “Even though the pier is closed, its essence lives on through us,” Boylan commented.

So, while Gillian’s Wonderland Pier may no longer welcome visitors, its legacy continues through these passionate fans, proving that sometimes, a piece of the past can be preserved in unexpected ways.
