The concert kicked off with Jeff Jarvis’ lively tune “Smackdown,” highlighting the talented trumpet and saxophone sections. Piano sensation Daxtun Heier captivated listeners with Sammy Nestico’s “That Warm Feeling,” while John Beisner brought charm to the classic “Just Friends.” The lineup also featured crowd favorites like “Night of the Mojito” and “It Had to Be You,” wrapping up the performance with the energetic “Give It One.”

The band practiced diligently, meeting twice a week since the semester began. Christine Damm, QU’s dean of fine arts and communication, emphasized the event’s importance, saying, “This concert shows the community that QU has incredible music ensembles. Our students represent all majors, from music to nursing.”

Music in education has long been shown to enhance learning across disciplines. According to a study from the National Endowment for the Arts, students engaged in music programs often display improved math and language skills. This intersection of interests might explain why you can find students from various fields coming together to create something beautiful.

Looking ahead, the QU Honor Jazz Festival will occur on Friday, April 25, bringing in some of the best high school jazz musicians from the area. There are also plans for a band concert and a choir concert in May.

These events not only highlight Quincy University’s commitment to music but also foster community connections through shared artistic experiences.
