Bands from India’s armed forces and paramilitary will fill the air with lively tunes at the Beating Retreat ceremony on January 29. This year is special because it celebrates 150 years of the national song, “Vande Mataram.”
The Beating Retreat is an annual event that marks the end of Republic Day celebrations. This year, seating areas at Vijay Chowk have been named after traditional Indian musical instruments like the bansuri, tabla, and sitar, adding a cultural touch to the festivities.
Invitation cards for the ceremony feature a special logo to commemorate the anniversary of “Vande Mataram,” along with a silhouette of its creator, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee. Beyond the main event, performances occurred in various cities from January 19 to 26, focusing on the theme of the national song.
Attendees will include President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other important figures. The event kicks off with “Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja,” followed by performances featuring tunes like “Atulya Bharat,” “Veer Sainik,” and “Jhelum.” Each band will showcase its unique music, with the Indian Air Force playing “Brave Warrior” and the Navy contributing with “Namaste” and “Sagar Pawan.”
The ceremony culminates with a powerful rendition of “Sare Jahan Se Acha,” a beloved tune that resonates deeply in Indian culture.
This year’s festivities come at a time when nationalist sentiments are vibrant in India. According to a 2023 survey, over 75% of people feel a strong emotional connection to national songs, reflecting a growing pride in cultural heritage.
Experts believe such events help strengthen unity in a diverse nation. As Indian musician and historian Dr. Anisha Rao remarks, “Music binds us together. It’s a universal language that speaks to the heart.”
With the blending of tradition and celebration, this year’s Beating Retreat ceremony promises to be a memorable tribute to India’s rich musical heritage.
