“It’s been one of the hottest tickets we’ve had,” said Tony Bruno, senior VP of Yankee Global Enterprises. “They add a new flair to baseball. It’s a phenomenon.”
The Bananas, comprised mainly of former college and minor league players, have captivated audiences across the country. Luke Weaver, a major league player, compared them to the Harlem Globetrotters. “It’s a fun twist on the game,” he said.
Playing in cities like Boston and St. Louis, the Bananas are known for their fast-paced games and quirky rule changes. For instance, stepping out of the batter’s box counts as a strike, and a fan catching a foul ball means an out for the batter. Despite all the fun, the game outcomes are genuine and unscripted, setting them apart from the Globetrotters.
“We aim to make baseball enjoyable,” shared Jared Orton, the team’s president. “From just 4,000 fans at our home base in Savannah to now reaching 45,000, we’ve come a long way.”
The Bananas faced challenges in gaining access to Major League Baseball venues. Orton recalled initial hesitations from teams about allowing such a whimsical brand of baseball in their stadiums. “It was daunting to ask, but they eventually embraced our approach once they saw our commitment to the game,” he said.
As they prepare for their games this weekend, Orton hints at exciting surprises for fans. “We hope to make our mark in The Bronx and maybe even at Citi Field in the future,” he said, ensuring that every night brings something new and entertaining.
