Kansas State’s volleyball team is on a roll, starting the season with an impressive 5-1 record. This Friday, they’re up against No. 25 North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It’s a big test, but senior setter Ava LeGrand is ready for the challenge.
“We’re feeling confident,” she shared after practice. “North Carolina is a fantastic team. This match will be tougher, but it’s exciting. Playing these higher-level teams gets us ready for the Big 12 season starting in two weeks.”
LeGrand is a standout player. She ranks fourth in the Big 12, averaging 10.44 assists per set, and her leadership on the court is undeniable. “My job is to set up the hitters and get them in the best position to score,” she explained. “It’s not just stats; it’s about mental and emotional support too.”
Her teammates are talented, too. Jordyn Williams leads the conference with a .524 hitting percentage, while Shaylee Myers is first in kills per set, hitting an average of 4.94. LeGrand highlights their strengths, noting, “Shay has been amazing since day one, hitting over .300 every match. And Brenna never fails to deliver; I can set her from anywhere.” Their teamwork is crucial for K-State’s success.
LeGrand approaches the game with passion and preparation. She emphasizes the importance of hard work, saying, “Confidence comes from being prepared. I focus on breathing exercises and watch a lot of film to improve. It helps keep me grounded, especially when things get tough.” Her positivity translates into her leadership style: “I want my teammates to see me smiling and enjoying the game.”
Family plays a significant role in her journey. LeGrand’s parents never miss a game, and her athletic lineage is impressive. Her mother was a volleyball coach, and her sister played at USC. Ava chose K-State partly to be closer to her family and to follow her boyfriend, Will Swanson, who plays football there. “I didn’t want to be seen as just following him, but I’m so glad I chose K-State,” she said.
Looking ahead, LeGrand is focused on creating a lasting culture within the program. She aspires to lead the team to the NCAA Tournament, stating, “We want every freshman who joins us to feel that winning is our goal.” With LeGrand at the helm, K-State volleyball is poised for success.
