Experience the Speed! New Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Hits 180 km/h – Watch the Thrilling Test Run Video by Vaishnaw

As Indian Railways gears up to launch its first Vande Bharat Sleeper train, the excitement is palpable. Set to debut in the new year, these trains promise to elevate overnight travel. Designed for speeds up to 180 km/h, they aim to transform long-distance journeys.

Current Vande Bharat services max out at 160 km/h, but the new sleeper variant will operate based on track conditions. These trains will feature modern safety systems, including the KAVACH anti-collision technology, which is developed in India. The incorporation of regenerative braking will also ensure energy efficiency, a step forward in sustainable travel.

Recently, Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Railways, tweeted about a successful speed test where the sleeper train hit 182 km/h. A video showed water-filled glasses inside the train staying perfectly balanced, showcasing its stability at high speeds.

These sleeper trains are equipped to enhance passenger comfort. The first prototypes boast 16 coaches, including 11 air-conditioned three-tier coaches, four two-tier coaches, and one first-class coach. Features such as low-intensity lighting, visual and audio announcements, CCTV surveillance, and modular pantry setups are designed with passenger needs in mind. Additionally, these trains will have bio-vacuum toilets similar to those on airplanes and accessible facilities for individuals with disabilities.

Manufactured by BEML in partnership with the Integral Coach Factory, these sleeper trains reflect a commitment to innovation. Plans for 10 additional train sets are underway with Kinet, a collaboration between Indian and Russian manufacturers. Moreover, contracts for another 80 units have been awarded to a consortium of Titagarh Rail Systems and BHEL. ICF is also pursuing its own designs.

Comparing past and present, the introduction of Vande Bharat trains marks a significant shift in Indian rail travel. Previously, trains were slower and less comfortable, affecting overall travel experience. With the introduction of over 200 sleeper trains planned in the next few years, the railways aims to redefine long-distance journeys, catering to growing passenger demand.

In recent evaluations, the railways ministry indicated that Vande Bharat trains currently operate as semi-high-speed services. Despite aimed maximums of 180 km/h, journeys depend on factors like track quality and scheduled stops.

As of late December 2025, there are 164 Vande Bharat services in motion across the network. The recently completed Dhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link, a challenging project consisting of numerous tunnels and bridges, further enhances connectivity. The inaugural 51-kilometre line in Mizoram has also opened new avenues for travel.

Overall, the Vande Bharat Sleeper trains symbolize a pivotal advancement in Indian rail travel, promising faster, safer, and more comfortable journeys for passengers. For more detailed insights on the project, you can visit the Indian Railways official portal here.
