Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently shared an exciting update about the Vande Bharat sleeper train. In a video posted on X (formerly Twitter), he showcased the train reaching its top speed of 180 km/h during trials between Kota and Nagda. The remarkable part? Water glasses on board remained perfectly balanced, demonstrating the train’s advanced technology.
The Vande Bharat sleeper train is designed for long-distance overnight travel, adding a sleeper option to the existing chair car service. Currently, two prototypes are being tested. Indian Railways plans to roll out over 200 of these sleeper trains in the coming years, significantly enhancing long-distance train travel.
BEML, in partnership with the Integral Coach Factory (ICF), is working on ten sets, while another ten are being crafted by Kinet, a joint venture with Russian partners. Additionally, a consortium including Titagarh Rail Systems and BHEL is set to deliver 80 sleeper trains. ICF is also developing its own version.

The sleeper train boasts 16 coaches, featuring 11 air-conditioned three-tier coaches, four air-conditioned two-tier coaches, and one air-conditioned first-class coach. It’s designed for semi-high-speed services, with operational speeds expected to reach 160 km/h, depending on track conditions.
Comfort is a priority, with cushioned berths, low-intensity night lighting, and modern amenities like audio announcements paired with visual displays. Security measures include CCTV surveillance and advanced bio-vacuum toilets, similar to those found in aircraft.
Safety is enhanced with KAVACH anti-collision technology, and the train will feature regenerative braking for energy efficiency. Furthermore, automatic doors will only open at designated stops, ensuring passenger safety.
