Moscow, Oct 2 (IANS) – On Thursday, Union Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita, honored Mahatma Gandhi by placing floral tributes at his statue in Ramenki Rayon Park. This tribute was part of the celebrations for Gandhi Jayanti.
Local authorities and members of the Indian community joined the event, recognizing Gandhi’s enduring message of truth, peace, and non-violence. Margherita shared on X, “Commemorating the 156th Birth Anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, I recognized his eternal teachings that guide us toward harmony and justice.”
Following this, Margherita connected with students and the Indian diaspora at the Embassy of India School (Kendriya Vidyalaya), discussing the relevance of Gandhian principles like self-reliance in today’s world. He linked these concepts to government initiatives such as Swachh Bharat and Atmanirbhar Bharat, which are rooted in Gandhian values and aim to drive India’s growth.
The event also featured prominent Russian dignitaries, Indologists, and Gandhian scholars. Earlier, Margherita engaged with the Indian community in Russia, praising their role in strengthening India-Russia relations and highlighting India’s rapid development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He expressed appreciation for the diaspora’s contributions and invited them to be part of India’s growth story.
On the same trip, Margherita inaugurated the ‘Best of India – Indian Apparels and Textile Fair’ in Moscow, promoting India’s textile sector. This fair, running from October 1-3 and organized by the Handloom Export Promotion Council, aims to enhance India’s exports to Russia and foster new partnerships within the Commonwealth of Independent States.
Margherita noted, “Under PM Narendra Modi’s vision, India’s textile industry is expanding its global presence, showcasing the excellence of Indian craftsmanship.” His visit from October 1-3 emphasizes India’s intent to strengthen trade and cultural ties with Russia, paving the way for closer cooperation overall.
This engagement highlights how historical values, like those of Gandhi, can still find relevance in modern diplomacy and trade. As India continues to build its international relationships, the spirit of Gandhi’s teachings remains a touchstone for leaders and communities alike.
