Experience the Stunning Peak Bloom of Peonies at the Arb: A Must-See Near the University of Michigan!

Ann Arbor, MI – Exciting news for flower lovers! The Nichols Arboretum’s W.E. Upjohn Peony Garden is set to bloom around the middle of the week of May 26. This annual event transforms the garden into a colorful spectacle, but the peak bloom will only last until June 8.

To make the visit easier, free shuttles will run on weekends from Mitchell Field to the garden. They’ll operate every 15-20 minutes from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the weekends of May 24-25, May 31-June 1, and June 7-8. This is the second year the arboretum has offered this service due to limited parking.

This historic garden is special. With over 800 types of peonies, it’s the biggest collection of heirloom and antique peonies in North America. Many of these varieties are rare and not available on the market anymore.

The garden attracts between 75,000 and 100,000 visitors annually. Along with the peonies, there are over 10,000 other flowers blooming during this season, making it a vibrant getaway for anyone looking to enjoy nature.

The peony garden has a rich history too. It started in 1922 when pharmaceutical mogul Upjohn donated the first peonies. The Board of Regents set aside $2,000 to officially create the garden, which became visible to the public in 1927. Since then, it has been a beloved spot for gardening enthusiasts and history buffs alike.
